The Project
Sicher im Kiez! was initiated as a pilot project in 2010. The weeklong workshops are designed to develop ideas concerning security and quality of life in cooperation with pupils living in Berlin. Because school classes participate as groups in the workshops, they learn not only as individuals, but are able to profit from it as a social unit, improving many aspects of social interaction within the classroom.
Requests for our workshops quickly exceeded our capacity, but with the help of additional funding from the Berlin Youth and Family Foundation and the Malteser Hilfsdienst we were able to conduct additional workshops throughout 2010 and in 2011. The positive feedback from Sicher im Kiez! participants, educators and parents and their expressed wish for more workshop capacities are the moving force behind our plans for programme expansion. We want politicians and local leaders to recognize the ideas children and teenagers have for social change. Moreover, the continuous evaluation of our activities helps us stay innovative and effective.
