Media Pedagogy

By working on a video project, Sicher im Kiez! participants are trained to be savvy media users and are able to tell their own stories about violence and to reflect upon personal experiences. They work in groups to design storyboards and short video clips dealing with security issues in their neighbourhood and strategies of violence prevention. This sets the stage for further discussion about spatial (in-)security in their environment. The “BürgermeisterInnenspiel” is then an engaging simulation game that allows pupils to take on the role of local leaders and to reflect on the changes they would like to see in their communities.

As a final step, the videos prepared by the groups are presented to a wider audience – the other pupils, families, teachers and decision makers in Berlin. Together, they discuss questions that arose during the screening and how they could work together to strengthen the sense of community and security in their neighbourhood. Having their voice heard instills confidence in the children and motivates them to become more actively engaged in their community.
